Rebecca Rusch Wins DK XL
Rebecca Rusch rode away victorious at the inaugural Dirty Kanza XL bicycle race held over the weekend of June 1, 2018 in Emporia, Kansas. New for 2018, Dirty Kanza event organizers added the Dirty Kanza XL event, an invitation-only 350-mile gravel bicycle race. Rebecca was the first female finisher with a time of 28:27:02 and finished fourth overall.
“This win is huge! The feeling of coming back to screaming crowds of friends and hugs after more than 28 hours alone on the bike…this is the feeling of personal accomplishment and connection with the community that is what this event is about for every rider out there.”
“DKXL is Dirty Kanza, taken back to the very basics of gravel. It’s the DK that (we) first set out to create in 2006. It’s long. It’s hard. It’s Extra-Large. It’s totally rider-self-supported,” said Jim Cummins, the executive director of Dirty Kanza Promotions.
Rebecca first competed in the 200-mile Dirty Kanza six years ago and it ignited a passion in her for gravel riding and racing events. The participatory and communal approach to Dirty Kanza served as inspiration for her to create her own Rebecca’s Private Idaho event held annually in her hometown of Ketchum, Idaho.
